The Art of A Woman's Flower

The Floral theme behind my new fall 2011 designs stem from a Feminist Artist by the name of Judy Chicago. Two years ago I went to the Brooklyn museum and there was an exhibit which included the work of Judy's floral sculpted plates. The flowers symbolized the female body. It was amazing how she created numerous plates depicting the female genitalia and I randomly reflect back to that exhibit as I respect artist that push the envelope without worrying what others think. I have always been told women hold a lot of power but if you give your flower away to quickly it can be lost...

The Art of an Open-See

Today Henri Bendel's held an Open-See call from 9AM-12PM for designers to share their precious works in hopes of getting a big break into the fashion industry. I of course attended and waited in line like everyone else as if we were auditioning for American Idol. I awoken from my slumber at 4AM and arrived at Bendel's by 6:30AM where there was a line of approximately 50 people waiting to meet the Buyers. Not too bad of a place in line however, the waiting in the cold for 3 hours was brutal. That's what I get for trying to be cute in my tights and shorts.

All of us hopefuls had our luggage filled with our collections of either Jewelry, handbags, accessories, fragrances and even cookies. I meet a few cool individuals and we were able to practice our pitch to one another. There was a lot that I learned from this experience that has prepared me and I am grateful for this day.

The Art of Religion

Although I was born into Catholicism, as an adult I chose to be a Christian. While I was in college I took a Religious Studies course and learned about all religions. I wanted to give myself a better understanding so that I could make an informed decision on what would be best for me. A college friend of mine was Muslim and invited me to a Mosque. Out of respect I was covered from head to toe. I remember the women and children were upstairs listening to the message over an intercom while the men were on the first floor. It was interesting to experience however I did not feel it was me. In my admiration for Arabic script I eventually got a tattoo that states "With God everything is possible" - Matthew 19:26.

I grew to be the woman that I am today upon gaining my connection to God when I began to study the word and attend Baptist church. There is much respect in me for other religions and dominations as I do have somewhat of a grasp on the subject. You actually can pull commonalities from each. I like to include some of the various religions symbolisms in my designs. As you see pictured, the Like a Prayer piece is in lieu of a Rosary.

Another that I have included in my designs is the Om symbol which is a sacred syllable for Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism.

The Art of Age

Last weekend I turned 31. March 5th to be exact. I'm an 80's baby all the way and proud of it. The 80's was a time where most of my all time favorite movies were made and there were bold fashion statements. Since then the 80's has made a comeback more than once. Actually, everywhere I go I see a bit of an 80's influence. How I spent my birthday...very low key. I went for a long stroll with my son, then to brunch as he slept the entire time in his stroller. I had some delicious french toast, eggs and chicken apple sausage at Cornerstone, a restaurant in Brooklyn. When I came home there was a bouquet of roses waiting for me from my sweet. Later on I went to dinner at Tao. The wait was over an hour with reservations however, it was worth it because the food was amazing! Then me and my party went to The W Hotel where there was a bit of a strange crowd but it's New York so you can't really escape that. The day after I had a Spa day with my friend. At 31 years young, I feel great. I'm happy healthy and spent my time celebrating it where and with whom I wanted.
